Parent Resource Center -

The Parent Resource Center will close for the summer on Thursday, June 6th. You may borrow materials to use with your children this summer. We have games, books, & DVD's that are FUN and educational. The Parent Resource Center is open during the school year, beginning Tuesday, Sept. 3rd, Monday - Thursday 8 - 3:30 and on Friday 8 - noon.

Simply check out the resources from the PRC by Thursday, June 6th.We ask that you keep track of all resources throughout the summer and return them the first week of school, September 3rd-6th. The Parent Resource Center is open during the school year, beginning Tuesday, Sept. 3rd, Monday - Thursday 8 - 3:30 and on Friday 8 - noon

Central Rappahannock Regional Library Summer Reading Club -

Summer reading equals summer learning and your local library makes it easy and fun to do both! Any book your teen reads, for school or just for pleasure, counts towards the public library’s program. Visit LibraryPoint.org/SRC_Signup to register, then keep track of the minutes and titles read and visit your nearest library branch every time more books are needed and prizes are earned! Incentives include candy, fun prizes and a chance to win movie passes.  Don’t have a home computer? No problem visit the library and we’ll get you started.

 

Registration Now Open for 2013 Summer School Programs -


Summer school programs are supported by dedicated staff and are targeted to meet the diverse needs of our students and community. Each educational opportunity provided is designed to actively engage students to maximize student success.  There are awide ranging program offerings including enrichment opportunities, credit recovery for high school students, and instructional intervention/remediation.

Division Teacher of the Year - Tara Hefner -


Each year, Spotsylvania County Public Schools participates in the Teacher of the Year program coordinated statewide through the Virginia Department of Education. All public and accredited nonpublic schools are able to participate in the Virginia Teacher of the Year Program to honor teachers who represent the best in teaching in Spotsylvania County Public Schools, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and across the nation. Spotsylvania County Public Schools’ Division Teacher of the Year for 2013-14 is Tara Hefner, second grade teacher at Courtland Elementary School.  Congratulations Mrs. Hefner!

Spotsylvania County Public Schools is extremely proud of our Mentor program and view it as a critical tool in retaining and inducting the best and brightest of our new teachers.  Our trained mentors are matched up with beginning teachers, many of whom come to us from other states, and help them assimilate into our schools and community.  Each year, outstanding new teachers and mentor teachers are recognized throughout our division.

Kindergarten Registration for 2013-2014 Now Underway -


Kindergarten Registration for 2013-2014 opened on March 25, 2013.  To enter Kindergarten next fall, a child must be 5 years old on or before September 30, 2013.

Congratulations to the Teachers of the Year -

Each year, Spotsylvania County Public Schools participates in the Teacher of the Year program coordinated statewide through the Virginia Department of Education.  All public and accredited nonpublic schools are able to participate in the Virginia Teacher of the Year Program to honor teachers who represent the best in teaching in Spotsylvania County Public Schools, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and across the nation.  For more than 40 years, Virginia has participated in the National Teacher of the Year Program, a project of the Council of Chief State School Officers.  The program is open to all teachers in pre-kindergarten through grade 12 who possess a current, renewable Virginia teaching license, including school librarians, guidance counselors, and reading specialists.  The Human Resources Department is pleased to have coordinated this process with our site principals.  From this group of nominees, the 2013 Division Teacher of the Year will be selected.  Later this spring, we will announce and recognize the New Teachers of the Year from the elementary, middle, and high schools levels, and the Mentor Teachers of the Year from elementary, middle, and high school. STEMABILITY at Virginia Tech -

This is the second year offering STEMABILITY at Virginia Tech.  This year's program will host 15 rising juniors or seniors with disabilities who have an interest in STEM careers (science, technology, engineering, and math. For more information click here.

Children must be 4 years old by September 30, 2013 to be eligible.
  • Applications and required documents must be submitted in person at the Head Start Administrative Office.
  • Applications are accepted Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

School's Superintendent's Award for Outstanding Visual Art Student -

 


This month, the Superintendent’s Award for outstanding visual art student for elementary school goes to Kyrstin Fredenberger. Kyrstin is a second grade student at Livingston Elementary School. Her art teacher is Dianna Mellott. Kyrstin’s artwork is hanging in the Superintendent’s office this month.

The nominees are Haley Gilley, Brock Road Elementary, art teacher Rebecca Behring; Mi Goodin, Riverview Elementary, art teacher Anne Flues; Javier Ventura-Garcia, Salem Elementary, art teacher Susan Hill; and Caroline Hamlett, Spotswood Elementary, art teacher Janis Gillespie.

We would like to congratulate the students on their outstanding accomplishments.

 

 

 

FY2014 School Budget Update -

On Tuesday, March 26, the School Board met with the Board of Supervisors for a joint work session at the Holbert Building and on Thursday, March 28, participated in a joint town hall meeting with the Board of Supervisors.  The Board of Supervisors will be voting on their budget on April 9 at 3 p.m. at the Holbert Building.  The School Board's next budget work session will be on April 15 at 6:30 p.m.

On Monday, March 19, the School Board presented their proposed budget to the Board of Supervisors.

On Monday, March 11, the School Board provided guidance to staff to reduce the budget gap to $3.2M.

On Monday, March 18 at 6:30 p.m., the School Board approved the FY2014 budget.  On Tuesday, March 19 at 6 p.m., the School Board will present their budget to the Board of Supervisors at the Holbert Building.

The recommendations made on March 11 reduce the Superintendent's FY14 Recommended Budget gap that was presented on January 28 by $5M.

VA Special Education Survey -


The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) requires each state to submit a special education State Performance Plan (SPP) and Annual Performance Report (APR) to the U.S. Department of Education. One of the indicators in the Performance Plan requires states to report: Percent of parents with a child receiving special education services who report that schools facilitated parent involvement as a means of improving services and results for children with disabilities.
